Welcome to the ¡Cuídate! Facilitator Training in Second Life ®
¡Cuídate! Is an evidence based program designed specifically for Latino youth to reduce sexual risk behavior. A key component of ¡Cuídate! Is to have trained facilitators delivering the program. We developed this training in Second Life in order to increase access to quality training. Our project uses Second Life ®, an online web-based environment where participants can learn and practice skills needed to implement ¡Cuídate!
Is your agency interested in participating in our project and in having their staff become trained in the ¡Cuídate! curriculum?
¡Cuídate! - which means, "take care of yourself" - is a cultural and theory-based sexual risk-reduction program designed specifically for Latino youth. The theme of ¡Cuídate! is woven throughout the program.
¡Cuídate! emphasizes the Latino cultural beliefs of familialism and gender-role expectations, including machismo. These beliefs are used to frame abstinence and condom use as culturally accepted and provide effective ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STIs).
The Latino beliefs of respeto and personalismo are also used in ¡Cuídate! as guides for facilitators to communicate with youth and for youth to communicate with each other during the program modules.
About Second Life ®

Second Life ® is an online virtual world developed by Linden Labs. This environment allows users to interact with each other and with the world around them via avatars which they create and customize. Avatars are able to move, talk and do many things that can happen in real life.
What to Expect From This Training
This training is designed to develop strategies and provide information as well as to enhance comfort level and skills to allow facilitators to deliver a successful and high quality program. The curriculum also provides a comprehensive source of program content, including training goals and objectives, module structure, interactive exercises, suggested methodologies, and discussion points geared towards the development of a successful, participatory training for facilitators of ¡Cuídate!
Objectives of the Training:
- Identify the components of the 6 modules of the ¡Cuídate! program.
- Help participants recognize how Latino culture supports safer sex decisions including abstinence and condom use.
Identify correct steps and skills needed to demonstrate condom use to adolescents:
- Demonstrate skills in negotiation of abstinence and condom use through the use of role plays.
- Respond appropriately to challenging questions or sensitive situations that may arise during program presentation.
Why We Are Providing This Training
The scale-up of effective evidence-based programs is sometimes held up by the inability to meet the demand for curriculum training. Traditional trainings are conducted face to face, are time intensive, often require travel, and are conducted at the same pace. Barriers to training include getting time off as well as the time and cost of travel.
Our goal is to offer a more efficient, user-based way for individuals to be trained in ¡Cuídate! We believe this method will provide an excellent learning environment to learn the skills necessary to deliver ¡Cuídate! and do so in way that is less costly and more convenient.
